CHEF's BIO

Chef Nathan Vanderberg Jr. born in Mount Vernon, New York but raised in Durham, North Carolina where he learned that a hot meal is something that could put a smile on anyone's face.

He has two wonderful daughters Natasha, and Alysa Rose, in which he loves dearly.

As a child growing up in poverty food was always at a minimum. As a Chef he prides himself in always making sure his family and friends are never without good meals and desserts and this comes as second nature to him.

Nathan loves to entertain people so he believes
God gave him a heart and hands to serve people with outstanding foods and desserts. Nathan is known best for his pound cake which he dubs NV Pound cake, which is sold at NOFO At The Pig restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina and his food truck NV Cakes, Sweets&Treats.

When Nathan was younger and first came to North Carolina he was told that a kitchen is a place where a woman should be, but Nathan always had a thing about the kitchen that attracted him to it. He believe it was the sweet smell from the kitchen where his grandmother Pauline made homemade bread pudding, still to this day one of Nathan favorite sweets, if made correctly, and which has pushed him into baking homemade foods himself. Nathan had never tasted anything like this and knew if his grandmother would just let him in the kitchen to cook he would find his niche. He would pay close attention to the details his grandmother would put into her southern cooking. When the opportunity came he would apply some of the same techniques she used in her cooking. Finally when Nathan got his chance he considered it the job of a life time. He began assisting his grandmother in the kitchen full time, from cleaning dishes to cleaning collards greens. His grandmother used his youth to her advantage but little did she know it was to Nathan's advantage as well. One of his grandmother words of wisdom was clean as you go, which he later learned in a culinary program as being one of the most important things in the kitchen.  Although his grandmother never used measuring tools but relied on "grandma measurements", he was in awe of how his grandmothers recipes would turn out perfect, and would be great tasting as well. Nathan however decided that using the correct measuring techniques would prove to be more beneficial to him in his culinary career.

Nathan has had an assortment of training from learning from others, being in the kitchen, catering, managing and working in various restaurants, including Sullivan's Steakhouse in Raleigh NC. Nathan also attended a culinary training program at The Food Shuttle program called "CJTP" which stands for Culinary Job Training Program, and also received his Food Safety certification, which he takes great pride in. Nathan has co-owned a food truck named Taste of Nola, and is now has his own on his food truck NV Cakes, Sweets & Treats, which he ensures you will love.
